2019 NFL Draft Prospect Report: Devin Bush
Name: Devin Bush
Listed Height: 5’11
Listed Weight: 234
Strengths: Devin Bush is an excellent athlete at the linebacker position who has the range and hit power to enforce sideline to sideline. He is the most dynamic when allowed to roam free in the second level away from climbing blockers due to his smaller frame and explosive movements. As an athletic specimen, he transitions his weight smooth due to fluidity in his hips, a low leverage point, and coordinated footwork. He possesses high levels of acceleration to come downhill and fit into run lanes, while also showing the ability to angle off and close on off-tackle runs. Bush can mirror and trace the run well from the second level, while being sudden into his lateral or linear pursuit. He is very cerebral and instinctive from his alignment, as he reads his keys, stays step and step with moving parts, and identifies run direction early in the rep. Bush is a wrap up tackler at the contact point and brings a lot of force with him into his strikes. His hand usage allows him retain leverage and to work off of Blocks. In coverage, he has fluidity in his drops and can be accurate in his recognition process, while being able to drive off of his back foot and to the throw. He can bend to around blocks to condense cluttered angles.
Weaknesses: Bush’s lack of length can restrict how he extends to reach and reel in at the tackle point. He has issues anchoring vs climbing O-Lineman in the second level due to his undersized frame that still needs to fill out some. Due to his limited stature, Bush can get forklifted off of his path of travel if he does not sink his hips. Bush takes unnecessary paths around defenders instead of angling directly at the football. He can be fooled by play actions, but has makeup speed to work back into phase.
Overview and Insights: Bush is an explosive sideline to sideline linebacker who would benefit the most in a WLB role that negates his frame concerns and allows him to have more space to work with. Bush will be a highlight of an NFL defense due to his range, tackling ability, and play making skills. He should have a Pro-Bowl career in which he gains high tackle production.
